During the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 32 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Six were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 22; South Hilo, 6; Ka‘u, 2; Puna and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 1,101 DUI arrests compared to 1,229 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.4 percent.
There have been 1,131 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,240 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 23 traffic official fatalities compared to 36 during the same period last year, a decrease of 36.1 percent.
To date, 13 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; two to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
