The American Red Cross is recruiting disaster volunteers on the east side of the Island of Hawaii. Barney Sheffield, Hawaii disaster coordinator, said, “To ensure East Hawaii communities are prepared for disasters before they occur, we need trained volunteers ready to respond. Please join our Red Cross ohana.” All disaster training is provided free of charge.
Register online at www.redcross.org/hawaii. Click on “Volunteer, Becoming a Volunteer.” The Red Cross will contact interested individuals about signing up for basic disaster classes.
All new disaster volunteers must take a series of free disaster trainings; the entire series must be attended. The next series of volunteer trainings will be held at the Red Cross office at 55 Ululani St. in Hilo on the following dates:
— “Disaster Services: An Overview,” Saturday, Nov. 16, 9 a.m. to noon;
— “Shelter Fundamentals,” Saturday, Nov. 16, noon to 4 p.m.;
— “Disaster Assessment Basics,” Saturday, Nov. 23, 9 to 11:30 a.m., and
— “Disaster Action Team: An Orientation,” Saturday, Nov. 23, noon to 3:30 p.m.
