Higher vehicle inspection fees will go into effect Friday as the state launches a new electronic system for the annual checkups.
The new fees are $19.19 for an automobile or truck and $13.24 for motorcycles or trailers. That’s $4.49 higher than the current fees.
The program will do away with monthly reporting by inspection stations, according to the state Department of Transportation, which is facing a backlog.
As part of the new program, the DOT’s contractor, Parsons, will provide tablet computers, printers and routers to each inspection station.
Of the new fees, $1.70 for each inspection will go toward administration and enforcement of the program. Another $1.69 will go to Parsons for equipment and technical support, according to the DOT.
