HONOLULU (AP) — A 29-year-old Honolulu man convicted of stabbing his mother to death has been sentenced to life in prison.
Charly Hernane was sentenced Tuesday for the death of Teresita Dumalan Hernane. He could be eligible for parole in the future.
Hernane was convicted in August. He did not testify at the trial or at sentencing.
Teresita Hernane and her husband adopted Charly Hernane, her husband’s nephew, when he was an infant.
She died May 21, 2011, of a stroke and injury to her jugular vein. An autopsy concluded the knife attack could have caused the stroke.
Prosecutor Darrell Wong says only Hernane knows why he killed his mother.
Wong says three mental health experts suggested that his methamphetamine dependence affected his reasoning.
