During the week of Oct. 14-20, police arrested 28 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 1,049 DUI arrests compared with 1,157 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: Hamakua, 2; North Hilo, 0; South Hilo, 8; Puna, 6; Ka‘u, 0; Kona, 11; South Kohala, 1; North Kohala, 0.
There have been 1,089 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,179 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.6 percent.
So far this year, there were 23 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 33 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30.3 percent.
To date, 13 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (2), or a combination of both (6).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
