We are the intruders
With all the worry about shark attacks lately, I’m wondering if it has come to surfers’ and bathers’ attention that we are intruding on the sharks’ habitat.
We should just be patient for the ultimate — the extermination of all sea life forms and sharks. This is what we humans will accomplish.
Then we all can go crazy and enjoy the ocean — unless it’s polluted.
Be patient my friends. It will not be too much longer.

$4,000 dog bite
A few weeks ago, a dear friend was bitten in the face by a dog. Even though the wounds required more than 30 stitches to her nose, chin and around her right eye, today there is virtually no indication that the bite ever took place.
Her recovery has been nothing short of amazing, and we are in total awe of the doctor’s skill and the care she was given by the emergency room staff at Hilo Medical Center.
But sadly, this tragedy was compounded when the hospital handed her the bill for this two-hour outpatient procedure: $4,200! This is someone with very limited resources, someone who has simply dedicated the last 13 years of her life caring for East Hawaii’s neglected, abandoned and abused animals. She is also one of America’s millions without health insurance.
I would love to know how our hospital could possibly justify such a seemingly outrageous bill. She was not transported by ambulance, nor was she required to stay over night in the hospital. Hopefully, someone from Hilo Medical Center will respond to help us better understand.

Legalize gambling
It seems to be that our politicians think that gambling in this state would mean more crime of all kinds.
If they would take their heads out of the sand, they would see all the illegal gambling going on, and all the other crimes that are associated with it.
They seem to ignore it because of the powerful lobbies by the Las Vegas casino owners, hotels, airlines and perhaps the auto rental companies. Vegas is the most popular destination for Hawaii residents. Primarily for what purpose?
Let’s legalize it and direct the tax revenue to our education system, which is somewhat lacking.
