Critics of geothermal development are planning a multi-day march from Pahoa to Hilo.
The march will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at Pahoa High School and last three days, said Steve Sparks, who is organizing the event in association with Puna Pono Alliance.
Participants will follow the shoulder of Highway 11 to Hilo and camp overnight on private property near Shower Drive in Hawaiian Paradise Park and Puainako Street in Hilo, he said.
Sparks, of Leilani Estates, is expecting about 30 to participate.
He estimates 17 will stick with the march the whole way.
They are expected to arrive at the Hawaii Electric Light Co. office in Hilo at around 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, Sparks said.
A petition against the expansion of geothermal power will be delivered then.
HELCO is reviewing proposals for a 50-megawatt expansion of geothermal power.
Occupy Hilo will also join the marchers at the HELCO office, Sparks said.
He said the march will be a good way to bring attention to the issue.
Sparks said he isn’t against geothermal power but believes not enough has been done to ensure that it is safe.
He said he has notified the Hawaii County Police Department and state Department of Transportation about the march.
