Officer of the Month chosen
The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaii recognized Officer Shea Nactor on July 25 as “Officer of the Month” for July. Nactor was honored for tracking down a murder suspect within three hours of the crime.
On May 20, Nactor was among the officers who responded to a report of a shooting in Nanawale Estates. The victim had been killed with a shotgun and the suspect had fled the area armed with a firearm. The suspect was apparently on the road during rush hour and was reportedly agitated, posing a possible threat to other citizens.
Nactor and other officers began to search for him. In an attempt to gain information about the suspect’s whereabouts, Officer Nactor began contacting persons in the community.
As a result, he developed a lead that the suspect had traveled to a home in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. He led the search team to that house, where officers were able to arrest the suspect without further incident.
Wiliwili Festival
set for Sept. 14
The Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative will host this year’s Wiliwili Festival on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Waikoloa Village. The Wiliwili Festival will be a fun, free educational event for all ages. The event will be held at an outdoor site along Quarry Road.
WDFI will be hosting forest tours, workshops, and kid’s activities in addition to promoting awareness of Hawaiian dry forest ecosystems, the species that live within them and the cultural, ecologic and intrinsic value of our native forests. The festival will include three forest tours within the Waikoloa Dry forest preserve throughout the day, beginning at 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Those interested are encouraged to sign up early, as space is limited.
Workshop topics will include edible landscaping and permaculture, propagation and growing techniques and traditional uses of wiliwili. There will be informational booths sponsored by environmental, educational and cultural organizations, a silent auction, native plant sales, food, music and free activities.
