Man charged after manhunt

Jeremy Todd Rios, arrested on Mauna Kea Tuesday after allegedly fleeing police, is facing a dozen charges stemming from a manhunt that closed the mountain to visitors.

Rios, 31, of Hilo, made an initial appearance in Hilo District Court on Thursday. His bail was maintained at $61,500, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday.

Rios is charged with: second-degree assault; second-degree terroristic threatening; second-degree robbery; car theft; damage to vehicle/property, two counts; disobeying police officers; first-degree unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle; reckless driving; driving with license suspended or revoked; and fourth-degree theft, two counts.

According to police, Rios ditched a stolen car near the Mauna Kea Visitors Center on Tuesday.

Police said he stole the car after he drove into a truck while fleeing officers responding to a report of a man flashing a gun while driving on Kinoole Street at about 7:40 a.m.

Police blocked visitor access to Mauna Kea Access Road around noon as they searched for him by foot and by helicopter.

Rios was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. after walking out from a field.

The second-degree assault and second-degree terroristic threatening charges are from an incident that occurred shortly before police received the initial report. In that case, a 55-year-old Hilo man received injuries to his face during an assault in the Wainaku area of Hilo, police said.

Rios is also facing a contempt of court charge from an unrelated case.

Rios has had several previous convictions, including second-degree theft, domestic abuse, assault of an officer, resisting arrest, driving under the influence of drugs, inattention to driving, driving without a license, contempt of court and failure to appear.
