camp at Panaewa
The 2013 Big Island All-Stars Biddy Basketball Camp will be held Aug. 16-18 at the Panaewa Indoor/Outdoor Courts. It’s for boys and girls ages 5 to 8 and each session starts daily at 8:30 a.m. and runs until noon.
Cost is $40 and payable to Big Island All Stars, with “Biddy Basketball Camp” written in the memo line on your check. Applications are available from Kami Shigematsu at Panaewa Gym and completed forms can be mailed to Daphne Honma, P.O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776, or turned in to Shigematsu at the gym.
The deadline to apply is Friday and only the first 90 applicants will be accepted. The fee includes instruction and a T-shirt. For more information, call Honma at 937-3223.
Yagi Summer
Basketball Camp
Registration is still being accepted for the inaugural Coach Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp, which runs Wednesday through Saturday in Hilo.
“We’ll accept sign-ups until camp starts Wednesday,” said camp director Clayton Honma. “We want to give everyone who wants to come to camp a chance to participate.”
The camp cost is $60 and includes all instruction, a T-shirt and a group photo.
The skill-development camp is for boys and girls ages 9-17 and will be held concurrently at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and the new Panaewa Covered Basketball Courts.
University of Hawaii women’s head basketball coach Laura Beeman and her assistants as well as UH-Hilo women’s head basketball coach David Kaneshiro and new men’s coach GE Coleman will take part in the event.
The camp is being sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars.
The camp is named in honor of former UH-Hilo basketball coach Jimmy Yagi, who coached the Vulcans for 18 years and helped guide the Vulcans-Hawaii Basketball School as well as various other hoop camps around the state for almost four decades.
The camp will start at 9 a.m. each day and include instruction and skill-development drills. Games will be played in the late afternoon and possibly evenings.

Agena clinic on
tap at Honokaa
Coach Dennis Agena of Kalakaua Basketball and his staff will conduct a three-day youth basketball clinic Aug. 23-25 at the Honokaa County Gym.
Agena runs the popular Kalakaua Clinic on Oahu and has developed several standout players over the years, including Derrick Low.
Children ages 6-18 may participate. Sponsored by the Hamakua Athletic Association, the clinic will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Times may vary due to the number of participants.
Players need to bring a basketball, basketball shoes, water, and proper playing attire. The registration fee is $60. Registration and waiver forms are available at Parks & Recreation offices, Ted’s Garage in Honokaa, and Sports Line in Hilo.

Age-group hoops
meeting for Hilo
An organizational meeting for an ages 8-10 basketball league will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at Aunty Sally’s Luau House.
All teams should have a representative at the meeting to register their team and to pick up their packet.

Mukai shoots ace
Derrick Mukai aced the par 3, 8th hole on Saturday at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. He used a 5 iron while playing with the Bay City Golf Club.
Sid Shimabukuro, Dana Sato, Aaron Hirano, Clayton Nishiura and Susan Muneno witnessed Mukai’s first hole-in-one.
