During the week of June 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, 7; Puna and South Kohala, 2 each.
So far this year, there have been 628 DUI arrests compared to 694 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent.
There have been 673 major accidents so far this year compared to 735 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.4 percent.
As of June 30, there were 18 official traffic fatalities compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.
To date, four of the fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to alcohol; one to drugs; and two, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
