Second attempt salvages airplane down off Maui
HONOLULU (AP) — A helicopter company has lifted a downed airplane from off the Maui coast.
The airplane Sunday on a flight from Honolulu made an emergency landing near Waiehu Beach. Four people on board were unhurt.
Pacific Helicopter on Tuesday hoisted the Piper Cherokee off the ground but cut it loose as it spun wildly.
Pacific Helicopters spokesman Martin Adams tells KITV-TV (http://bit.ly/10EHe4w) the first salvage attempt ran into problems because the airplane’s wing was bent.
He says wind caught the wing and made the airplane uncontrollable.
He says returning the airplane to shore could have hurt someone on the ground and the safest thing to do was cut it loose over the water.
Divers Thursday reattached a line to the airplane and a helicopter lifted it out of the water.
