During the week of June 10-16, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunken driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Seven were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, 6; and Puna, 5.
So far this year, there have been 594 DUI arrests compared to 643 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8 percent.
There have been 647 major accidents so far this year compared to 694 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 18 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.
To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; one to alcohol; and two, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
