HONOLULU (AP) — The federal trial against the founder of the Hawaii Cannabis Ministry has been delayed again.
A defense hearing has postponed Roger Christie’s trial to October. He’s been held without bail since July 2010. Christie’s attorney has asked for more time to respond to a prosecution move to keep the religious freedom defense from being used during trial.
Christie’s attorney Thomas Otake wants to be allowed to raise the defense that he should be acquitted of marijuana trafficking charges under the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The Hilo ministry is now defunct.
Christie was one of 14 indicted by the federal grand jury on marijuana trafficking charges after a two-year investigation of the ministry. He was the only defendant detained without bail.
