The Hilo Fun Dance Group will sponsor two charity events on Saturday and invites the community to join in for some fun, all in the name of a couple of good causes: The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island and the Care Resource Hawaii-Senior Helpers.
A zumba fitness activity to benefit the B&GC will run from 9-10:15 a.m. at Aunty Sally’s Luau House on Piilani Street in Hilo. The evening charity event for Care Resource Hawaii-Senior Helpers is a ballroom dance activity from 6-9 p.m. at the same location.
Both of the beneficiaries are partner agencies under the umbrella of the Hawaii Island United Way, whose mission is “to unite people, organizations and resources to build a healthier community.”
At its various locations, the B&GC works “To inspire and enable Big Island youth to be productive and responsible citizens, through quality programs in a safe and caring environment.” Focus is on the outcomes of “school success, positive health behaviors and positive character development.”
Care Resource Hawaii-Senior Helpers provides in-home assistance to homebound aging elders and disabled adults needing services, regardless of their ability to pay.
Tickets for the morning event are $5, and for the evening dance are $10. Get them from Hilo Fun Dance Group volunteers, or by sending an email to hilofundance@yahoo.com and requesting that a ticket be reserved. Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event.
The purpose of Hilo Fun Dance is to provide a place where everyone has opportunity to learn to dance in a fun and relaxed setting, and to provide dance events and activities to raise funds to help charitable community organizations.
During the past four years, Hilo Fun Dance Group has sponsored many charity events during the spring and summer. Hilo Fun Dance Group sponsored its first event on March 21, 2009, for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Subsequent charity events benefited the Hawaii Island United Way, Hospice of Hilo, The Emergency Domestic Abuse Shelter for Women and Children, The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island, The American Red Cross-Japan Relief Fund, Hawaii Island Adult Care Inc., Child and Family Service, and The Food Basket Inc.
“The people of Hilo have always been generous, kind and giving,” said spokeswoman Roberta Shiratori. “The supporters, volunteers and friends of Hilo Fun Dance are precious people who realize that giving is better than receiving.
HFDG invites the public to the celebration of giving on Saturday at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale to support the Hawaii Island United Way.
