The nonprofit Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will present its next “Sunday Walk in the Park” from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Sunday.
Led by Nick Shema, this month’s five-mile roundtrip hike will start at the resources management parking area.
“We will take the Kilauea Iki Trail to Na Huku (Thurston Lava Tube). From there we will proceed past Na Huku down the Escape Road for about one mile and take a right on the Crater Rim Trail. We will follow that trail to the Chain of Craters Road and proceed to the Devastation Trail parking lot,” said Shema. “From there we will take the Byron Ledge Trail to the Kilauea Iki Trail and back to the starting location. We will stop for bag lunches along the way.”
Shema, who chairs the Friends Programs Committee, said it will be a moderately strenuous hike, mostly on forested trails. Participants should be prepared for the base 4,000-foot elevation as well as for variable weather conditions, including sunny, windy, chilly, and/or rainy.
“This monthly program, offered on second Sundays, is aimed at bringing together the members of FHVNP to share in the park’s beautiful trails,” Shema noted.
FHVNP’s “Sunday Walk in the Park” is free for Friends members, and nonmembers are welcome to join the Friends in order to attend. Annual memberships are $30 for individuals and $45 for families, and come with a variety of benefits. To register, contact FHVNP at 985-7373 or admin@fhvnp.org.
