The group show, “Life as We Know It,” showcases the work of five artists of East Hawaii — Ingrid Fregeau, Eve Furchgott, Suzy Papanikolas, Melissa Reed and Sarito — in the Central and Mauka Galleries at the East Hawaii Cultural Center this month.
The opening reception at EHCC, at 141 Kalakaua St. in downtown Hilo, will be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The public is invited.
Fregeau, a figurative sculptor in Hilo, is exhibiting her “Yogi and Meditation Series,” with ceramic figures of men in yoga positions and contemplative poses. Furchgott, of Hakalau, is showing recent prints, primarily monotypes and woodcuts (moku hanga, traditional Japanese technique). Papanikolas, of Papaikou, is showing acrylic paintings, scenes of local Hawaiian life. Reed, who has returned to Hilo after some years in New York, is displaying acrylic paintings and mixed media pieces of her “Journey So Far.” Sarito, another Papaikou artist, is featuring bronze sculptures of things that, for her, “… evoke the delightful, splendid experience of seeing beauty.” These include figurative pieces of hatha yoginis, orchids and other organic forms.
The June exhibit at the EHCC also features works by painter David Hubbard.
