The 25th annual North Hawaii Community Hospital has their Senior Health Fair today from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. This event supports National Senior Health and Fitness Day and the hospital’s mission to “improve the health status of the people of North Hawaii by improving access to care and providing high quality services at a reasonable cost.”
Seniors are invited to a full day of activities, complimentary health information, services and screenings, including blood tests by Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii. Everyone will enjoy a complimentary lunch, bingo, giveaways and more.
Registration is until 11 a.m. The Screenings are from 8 a.m.-noon. Lunch and entertainment from noon-2 p.m. Screenings include cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose, oral and hearing, stroke risk assessment, skin cancer, eyes and feet, plus massage therapy and more.
A Memorial Day service will be held on Saturday, May 25, at the Hakalau School Ball Park at the Veteran’s Memorial. The guest speaker will be Edward Texeira, retired State Civil Defense Leader. Refreshments will be serviced at the Hakalau Jodo Mission after the Service. Everyone is welcome. Please come and join the community. The Hawaii Saddle Club, with the support of their sponsors and donors, is proud to have awarded seven scholarships to Hawaii’s outstanding youth this year. They are Mindy Silva of Honokaa High School, Casey Stevens of Kohala High School, Cheyenne Fuerte of Kealakehe High School, Justin Jose of Laupahoehoe High School, Kynan Kawai of Kamehameha High School, Pa’ele Kiakona of Kamehameha High School and Darcy Mulligan of the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Hawaii Saddle Club is very proud of these young adults and wishes them the very best of luck in all their future endeavors.
A planning meeting for the Onomea and Kainaule camps reunion is coming soon. Join the fun of planning for this special July 5 event. Anyone interested can attend the meeting on Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. at Papaikou Hongwanji MultiPurpose Hall. The meeting should last about an hour. Come Volunteer to help or just come to listen. Waimea Middle School proudly extends an open invitation to the community to celebrate student accomplishments. The free evening event, Journey of Learning, will be held on Wednesday, May 22, at Kahilu Town Hall. The program will begin at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5:15 p.m. for cocoa, coffee, sandwiches and cookies. The community is encouraged to arrive early to enjoy refreshments and walk across to Kahilu Theatre for a quick viewing of a very special exhibit which features art by students and family members of Waimea Middle and most other Waimea schools.
The Journey of Learning program will begin with select students from 6th-8th grade presenting original poems. Kealoha, a keiki o ka‘aina, will emcee this portion of the program. Kealoha is known for his captivating poetry performances and has performed at the White House and at Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s inauguration where he earned the title of Hawaii’s poet laureate. Steven Kealohapauole Hong-Ming Wong is better known by his pen name, “Kealoha.”
Kealoha hasn’t always been a poet. In fact, it was only after graduating from MIT with honors in nuclear physics that he discovered his real passion was performance poetry, and since then he spends most of his time helping students create and share their own stories, using poetry as a vehicle of self expression. Kealoha was invited to Waimea Middle School for a third year by language arts teacher and department head Leesa Robertson, thanks to a Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts grant — supplemented by school funds — to integrate Kealoha’s innovative approach into the school’s curriculum. Kealoha has visited 6th, 7th and 8th grade language arts classes several times this year for poetry workshops, and his contagious energy and passion inspired and supported students as they created their own poems.
After Waimea Middle School students share their stories through performance poetry, Waimea’s own Pwo navigator, Chadd Paishon, will talk story about the school’s year-long voyaging theme. Paishon, who is captain of Na Kalai Wa’a’s Makali’i voyaging canoe, will tie student Journey of Learning lessons and experiences this school year to ongoing planning for the worldwide voyage of the Hokule’a. Teachers have integrated a voyaging theme across the curriculum to include many cultural and hands-on-learning experiences for students. Paishon and fellow members of Na Kalai Wa’a have worked with students at most of the Waimea schools as well as with community members throughout the year to involve all of Waimea in the coming historic voyage.
The entire community is invited to this free year-end showcase of student learning.
