The Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association (HBDA) East Hawaii chapter invites the Big Island community to its 24th Anniversary Ball at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, at the Hilo Elk’s Lodge. A ticket, which costs $15, can be reserved by calling 935.4665 or emailing hbdaehi@gmail.com.
The cost of the ticket includes admission to the ball and heavy pupus. Semi-formal attire is requested. A no-host bar will also be available that evening.
The ball theme is “Celebrate Our Lives.” To celebrate life and dance, chapter members and instructors will be performing a very lively and fun cha cha routine choreographed by East Hawaii rotating instructors Joyce and Andrew Iwashita. HBDA instructors and members from Oahu will also be presenting dance exhibitions.
A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Kaya Award, named for Hisao and Hagie Kaya, who were among the founders of the Hilo Chapter. This award recognizes the most enthusiastic new chapter member.
Officers of the chapter for 2013 are Tina Beleno, president; Marie Roberts, vice president; Lisa Javier, secretary, and Imai Namahoe, treasurer.
Classes are held Wednesday evenings at Waiakea High School. Throughout the year the chapter offers classes such as cha cha, waltz, rumba, samba and fox trot in the American social style of dance.
