The University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources next week launches a series of free food safety workshops for growers on the Big Island.
To sign up for the Risk Management Workshop Series, please call 887-6183 or email mddiaz@hawaii.edu.
The first session will be on Monday, May 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Waimea Civic Center conference room in Waimea. The second will be Tuesday, May 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Aupuni Center conference room in Hilo. The final Big Island session will be on Wednesday, June 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m at the Kainaliu Cooperative Extension Service in Kona.
“Effectively managing risk is important to all agricultural producers. Having an acceptable food safety program is in the best interest of consumers, buyers and you, the farmer,” said Maria Derval “Didi” Diaz-Lyke of the extension office in Waimea.
“This workshop helps fresh produce growers, of all types, learn about Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and how to write and implement an effective, farm-specific food safety plan,” she said. “With the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act regulations to be in force in the near future, it is never too soon to get started on implementing GAPs on your farm.”
CTAHR’s Farm GAPs Coach Luisa Castro will also cover what most third-party audit companies require.
