The University of Hawaii softball team received the No. 2 seed in the Seattle Regional on Sunday when the NCAA Division I tournament pairings were announced.
The Rainbow Wahine (43-11), who received an automatic NCAA bid by virtue of their Big West championship, will open Friday against Minnesota at 12:30 p.m. Hawaii time.
The other two teams in the double-elimination regional — Portland State and host Washington — are clubs that Hawaii played earlier this season. However, UH hasn’t faced the third-seeded Golden Gophers (35-16) since 1990. Minnesota, the Big Ten runner-up, returns to the NCAAs since 2003.
Hawaii is making its fifth trip to the tournament and its 11th under coach Bob Coolen.
The second game Friday will feature overall No. 11 seed Washington (38-15) against Portland State (25-29). The Warriors beat Portland State twice earlier this season and split with the Huskies.
Winners’ and losers’ bracket games will be held Saturday along with an elimination game, and a champion will be crowned Sunday to advance to super regionals.
