HONOLULU (AP) — A prisoner has been found dead in his cell at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
Department of Public Safety officials say that Mark Davis Jr. was found dead in his cell just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Officials say the 25-year-old man was alone in his cell at the time.
An autopsy was to be done Wednesday.
According to corrections officials, Davis was committed to the Hawaii State Hospital by reason of insanity for raping and killing a 6-year-old Puna girl. While at the hospital, he also assaulted a staff member and was transferred to the jail.
Davis’ death is the third time in a month that a Hawaii prisoner has died behind bars.
The other two deaths were determined to be suicides.
