New classes in Buddhism at Hayagriva Dharma Center

The Hayagriva Dharma Center in Hilo is beginning a new class series called “Buddhist Practice and Life: Training the Mind” with guest teacher Pailin Young. These webcast classes are open to all levels of experience, including those new to Buddhism.

There are four classes: Sunday, April 28, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, May 8, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 19, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 26, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Pailin Young is the translator, principal attendant and teaching assistant for Lama Namnang Mingjo Dorje Rinpoche, lineage holder of the Nagavararaja Buddhist Lineage from China.

She hopes to show how Buddhist teachings can help students in their daily lives. Understanding and transforming the negative and increasing the positive qualities of our mind is referred to as Buddhist “science of mind.”

Young says that an individual’s life experiences are important ways to understand Buddha’s teaching, and Buddhist logic also helps to understand life. This series will discuss: “How to face the challenges of life by using Buddha’s teachings”; “Using examples from our lives and Buddhist stories to understand cause and effect and learn to understand and observe the mind”; “Methods to manage our emotional reactions to life’s challenges by understanding and recognizing the afflictive emotions,” and “How to apply antidotes: Introduction to Tibetan Buddhist mind-training methods, which bring increased peace and more harmonious relations with others.”
