After securing its second consecutive trip to states, Hilo now can turn its attention to its league title defense.
Aliesa Kaneshiro pitched six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts and Jordyn Breitbarth singled twice during a 14-run first inning at Pahoa as the Vikings won 18-10 to wrap up the Big Island Interscholastic Federation regular-season softball title in Division I.
Fantacie Keahilihau-Kuamoo ripped a triple and a double for Hilo (8-1 BIIF, 12-2), which earned the league’s first berth at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament.
The Vikings finish the regular season Saturday at home against Waiakea, then they host fourth-seeded Kealakehe at 3 p.m. April 25 in the BIIF semifinals.
Kaneshiro worked the first three innings Wednesday before giving way to Sharlei-Graham Bernisto. The Daggers rallied for 10 runs off the freshman in the fourth inning, then Kaneshiro pitched the final three.
Randi Berinobis collected three hits, including a double for the Daggers (2-7, 3-11). In the circle, Berinobis started but couldn’t get out of the first inning, allowing seven runs.
As the fifth seed, Pahoa will travel to Kapaau to face No. 4 Kohala at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a BIIF Division II first-round playoff game.
