HONOLULU (AP) — A 27-year-old man who was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter in 2008 has been sentenced again on a lesser charge.
Less Schnabel’s sentence was cut in half on Tuesday.
Schnabel was convicted of punching 34-year-old Christopher Reuther in the face for taking his picture at Nanakuli Beach Park on Oahu’s west coast in 2007.
Last year, the Hawaii Supreme Court overturned the case because of statements the prosecutor made during closing arguments and Schnabel was set free. The victim’s family decided it did not want to go through with another trial and Schnabel pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree assault.
Judge Michael Wilson sentenced Schnabel to a maximum 10 years. He will get credit for time served.
