From a record 658 entries statewide, Hawaii’s oldest and largest youth video completion — the ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition, presented by Sony — has named 114 finalists.
The finalist videos come from public, charter and private schools all across Oahu, the Big Island, Kauai and Maui.
Winners will be announced on Friday at an awards banquet at Ko Olina Resort & Marina. High-definition Sony digital video cameras will be awarded to the winning schools in each of the 38 divisional categories.
Last year, about 600 educators, student-producers, guests and Gov. Neil Abercrombie celebrated the finalist videos at the awards banquet. Many traveled from the Neighbor Islands to attend and be honored.
‘Olelo Youth Xchange was developed to help give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them.
This year, Youth Xchange videos are competing in seven broad categories and seven sponsored categories. Broad categories include animation, mini-documentary, news, public service announcement and short, Expert and Junior Expert.
Established in 2003, ‘Olelo Community Media’s Youth Xchange is Hawaii’s largest and first issues-oriented statewide student video competition. This year’s record 658 videos were submitted by K-12 public, private, charter and home school students. For more info, visit www.olelo.org/yxc.

There are three age divisions: elementary, intermediate and high school. Previous winners and students with professional experience compete in the Junior Expert and Expert categories.
Sponsored subjects include “Be a Jerk,” “Energy Conservation,” “I Ola Hawai‘i,” “Peacemaker,” “Saving H2Outdoors,” “Start Living Healthy” and “Traffic Safety.”
Judges have selected winners and finalists based on subject impact and technical production. These panels include local news media, filmmaking professionals and subject experts.
