FBI opens new Oahu field office
KAPOLEI, Oahu (AP) — The FBI has a new office in Hawaii.
Honolulu Field Office Special Agent in Charge Vida Bottom officially opened the facility on Tuesday by untying a maile lei.
The building in the Honolulu suburb of Kapolei has a fitness center, a weapons vault, solar power and an annex for automotive and electronic repairs.
It will serve as the headquarters for all FBI operations in Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The FBI says its previous location in the federal building near downtown Honolulu was too small to meet technological infrastructure requirements.
The new building will help the FBI handle expanding needs of criminal investigation and intelligence.
About 200 employees work at the site.
Smoking banned on some beaches
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii visitors and residents who smoke cigarettes will have to put them out before stepping foot on some of Honolulu’s sandy beaches.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed a measure Monday that bans smoking in several beaches and parks in Waikiki and other parts of Honolulu.
The new law prohibits smoking in Duke Kahanamoku Beach Park, Kapiolani Beach Park, Kapiolani Park Beach Center, Kapiolani Park, Kuhio Beach Park, Sandy Beach Park and beach areas of Ala Moana Regional Park.
The law goes into effect immediately.
Violators will be fined $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense within a year and $500 for additional violations.
Man in pushing
case arraigned
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A man accused of critically injuring a Japanese visitor who was pushed from a cliff was to be arraigned Tuesday in Circuit Court on Kauai.
Justin Wynn Klein, 37, faces charges of second-degree attempted murder. He is accused of pushing a 31-year-old woman from a trail and off a 15-foot cliff in Kalalua on Dec. 16. The woman was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized for 10 days before returning to Japan.
Klein was arrested without incident Saturday at Lydgate Beach Park in Wailua.
It now appears that he turned himself into police. Kauai Police Department Chief Darryl Perry says Klein asked a bystander at Lydgate to call the police for him.
