UHH’s Salinas
University of Hawaii at Hilo junior Vanessa Salinas has been selected the 10th Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Week for 2013.
It marks her second honor after claiming the award for March 18-24.
The conference announced the softball award on Monday, for games contested April 1-7.
Salinas, a right-hander from Madera, Calif., led the Vulcans to a 9-1 week, including a 5-1 record at the Tournament of Champions that was held April 5-7 at Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif.
In five starts, Salinas produced a 5-0 record with three complete games and two shutouts.
She posted a 1.47 earned run average over 28.2 innings of work, allowing just six earned runs and three walks.
Salinas struck out 18 hitters and gave up 22 base hits — 18 singles and five doubles — while opponents managed to hit just .212 against her during the week.
Honokaa seeking
basketball coaches
Honokaa High School is accepting applications for varsity head coaching positions for boys and girls basketball.
Applications are available at the main office during school hours, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Warriors volleyball
competes on Oahu
The Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii boys varsity volleyball team participated in two volleyball events this past weekend on Oahu.
The first event was the 2nd annual Kapalama Cup tournament hosted by the Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama Volleyball Team.
The tournament began on Thursday with pool play in which KSH played two opponents in two sets only matches and continued into Friday and Saturday with (best 2 out of 3 sets) double-elimination play.
The KSH team finished in 3rd place behind runner-up KS-Kapalama and tournament champion Huntington Beach, Calif.
Results as follows:
• Thursday: KSH lost to Huntington Beach 18-25, 23-25; KSH defeated Kaiser High 25-19, 25-22.
• Friday: KSH lost to KS-Kapalama 19-25, 20-25; KSH defeated Hawaii Baptist Academy 25-21, 22-25, 25-20.
• Saturday: KSH defeated St. John Bosco of California 26-27, 25-23, 25-21; KSH defeated Highland High of Arizona 23-25, 25-22, 25-14; KSH lost of KS-Kapalama 21-25, 25-20, 26-27.
The second event was the “Clash of the Titans” (best 3 out of 5 sets) matches hosted by Punahou High School in which two mainland high school teams (Mira Costa and Santa Barbara) flew in from California to play two matches each, one each against Punahou and KS-Hawaii.
The results are as follows for KSH:
• Friday: KSH defeated Santa Barbara 13-25, 25-18, 25-22, 28-26.
• Saturday: KSH lost to Mira Costa 29-27, 14-25, 18-25, 18-25.
Waiakea girls VB
meeting & potluck
The Waiakea High School girls volleyball teams’ new coaching staff will be having a “Meet & Greet” Potluck on Sunday, April 21 at the Waiakea Gym, from 1 to 3 p.m. Families are asked to join in by bringing their favorite pupu/finger food & dessert potluck.
All returning athletes as well as incoming freshmen and new students for the 2013-14 school year interested in trying out for the varsity and junior varsity teams are encouraged to attend.
This will be an opportunity for players and parents to meet the new coaching staff as well as clarifying the voluntary summer workout and strengthening/conditioning program, prior to the tryouts that will be held in late July.

Jr. Phenom Camp
at Panaewa gym
The Jr. Phenom Hawaii Regional for middle school level boys and girls, grades 5th through 8th, is slated for May 17-19 at the Panaewa Park gym.
According to Hawaii Regional Camp director Kalani Silva, the cost is $199 with an Early Bird Special of $150 to May 6, and each player will receive an adidas Phenom uniform, four game guarantee, several hours of skill development, and informative breakout sessions (see below and website for details, www.phenomhawaii.com). The Regional Camp concept is used around the country by Phenom Basketball to identify players to attend their National Camps in the summer. All eligible players must attend a regional camp for evaluation and qualification for an invitation to Nationals.
