in BIIF boys judo

The Waiakea boys judo team sits in first place in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation standings with a 4-0 record.
The Warriors have posted wins over Hilo (80-20), Ka‘u (70-0), Keaau (60-30) and Kealakehe (60-40) for eight points.
Kamehameha (2-0), Hilo (2-1), and Kealakehe (2-1) are tied for second with four points each. Keaau (1-2) has two points while Ka‘u (0-3) and Konawaena (0-4) are tied for last place.
The next BIIF meet is at 9 a.m. Saturday at Kamehameha. Then it’s the BIIF team championships at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 13 at Konawaena. The top four teams make the playoffs.
The BIIF individual championships will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, April 20 at Waiakea.
The Warriors have won the last eight BIIF team championships.
The Hilo girls are in first place after wins over Ka‘u (70-0), Kona (50-10) and Waiakea (60-15) for six points.
Waiakea (2-1-1) is second with five points, Kamehameha (2-0) tied for third with four points with Kona (2-2). Kealakehe (2-2) is in fifth with four points while Ka‘u (0-3) and Keaau (0-3) are tied for last.
UHH hosting prep
basketball clinic
The University of Hawaii at Hilo will host a high school basketball coaches clinic from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the UHH Athletic Complex, Building 320C, Room 118 and UHH Gym.
Clinicians for the sessions will be Lady Vulcans basketball coach David Kaneshiro, UHH athletic director Dexter Irvin and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs athletic director Stephen Kirkham, a former women’s coach at Colorado Mesa University who left after 16 seasons as the winningest coach in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Irvin’s experience includes coaching women’s basketball at Dixie State College (2001-05), Western New Mexico University (1988-93), Clarendon College (1985-88) and Utah Valley Community College (1978-79).

Coed softball tourney
is on tap in Waimea
The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a coed softball tournament (seven men/three women) on May 3-5 at Waimea Park.
There is a 12-team limit and the entry fee is $200.

Keiki pitch, hit, run
Saturday in Waimea
The Department of Parks and Recreation and Waimea Athletics are holding a “Waimea Pitch, Hit & Run” from 9-11 a.m. Saturday for ages 7-14 at Waimea Park.
Sign-ups begin at 8 a.m., and registration is also available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. today at Waimea Community Center. A valid birth certificate must be presented.

HGEA volleyball
league on tap
The Hawaii Government Employees Association will be hold a coed volleyball league at Waiakea-Uka Gym on Wednesday evenings starting April 10.
All interested teams/individuals may contact HGEA office at 935-6841 to register. The deadline to enter is Friday.
