Three avid quilters, born and raised in Hawaii, are hosting a Contemporary Hawaiian Quilt Show today through Saturday in Hilo in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Merrie Monarch Festival.
The show is on the second floor of the East Hawaii Cultural Center at 141 Kalakaua St., across from Kalakaua Park in downtown Hilo. The hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The hosting quilters are Kathy Tripp, Roberta Muller and Linda Smith. Smith has been quilting since 1971, Muller since 1967 and Tripp since 1990. Tripp is the owner of Kilauea Kreations II in Hilo, and the other two have each taught Hawaiian quilting at her store.
The show will feature quilts by the three ladies, as well as quilts, pillows and kits for sale. There will quilting and applique demonstrations, bed-size pattern tracing and quilting lessons. A small kit fee will be charged for the classes.
“Don’t miss an opportunity to learn and to create your very own Hawaiian quilt. A complimentary Hawaiian quilt lesson will be offered at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday,” said an EHCC spokeswoman.
