The University of Hawaii baseball team wasted another solid pitching performance in remaining winless.
Jordan Stephens struck out 10 in a complete game Saturday and Shane Hoelscher doubled and scored the go-ahead run on an error in the eighth inning as No. 10 Rice beat the Warriors 3-1 in Honolulu.
UH (0-6) ended a 26-inning scoreless streak, but it wasn’t enough to save Connor Little from a tough-luck loss. The afternoon game started less than 14 hours after the Owls (4-2) had finished off a 2-0 win in a 17-inning marathon Friday night.
Warriors left fielder Adam Hurley was 3 for 3, including a single to center in the seventh that scored Conner George to tie the game 1-1.
Rice came right back with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Hoelscher led off with a double to center and he gave the Owls the lead when Keenan Cook reached on a Kitamura, Pi’ikea’s throwing error.
Connor Teykl came through with a pinch-hit RBI later in the inning, and that proved more than enough run support for Stephens (1-1), who allowed only five hits and a walk.
In 7 1/3 innings, Little (0-2) allowed eight hits, two runs — one earned — with two walks and a strikeout.
Ford Stainback was 3 for 4 for Rice, and he doubled and scored the game’s first run in the sixth.
The team play the third of a four-game series at 1 p.m. today (OC16).
