Hikers call for help after getting lost
HONOLULU (AP) — Two hikers are walking down Oahu’s popular but off-limits “Stairway to Heaven” trail after spending the night in the mountains.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said a helicopter rescue team spotted the man and woman descending the trail late Friday morning.
Lum says the two called for help at 7 p.m. Thursday saying they were lost.
A rescue team went to get them. But they suspended their operation because it was dark and the presence of power lines wouldn’t allow them to land a helicopter.
They resumed their rescue effort Friday morning.
The Navy built the stairs during World War II to access radio equipment at the mountain summit.
The trail isn’t maintained and is officially closed to the public, but many people still hike it.
