The next film in the University of Hawaii at Hilo Global Lens international film series will be “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,” on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in the University Classroom Building Room 127. There is no admission charge.
The film is about Ai Weiwei, China’s most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic. It is the inside story of “a dissident for the digital age” who inspires global audiences and blurs the boundaries of art and politics. Against a backdrop of strict censorship and an unresponsive legal system, Ai expresses himself and organizes people through art and social media.
First-time director Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China. Her detailed portrait provides a nuanced exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compelling public figures.
The film won numerous awards, including the Winner of the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize in 2012 and the National Board of Review’s 2012 Top 5 Documentaries.
