Roadwork on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo could be done by the end of February, about a month ahead of schedule, according to the Hawaii County Public Works Department.
Yamada & Sons has been working through the weekends, which will help crews finish earlier than expected, said Noelani Whittington, department spokeswoman.
“They changed their schedule just about a couple days into the project and went daily,” she said. “I think they are working fast and furious to make that deadline a lot sooner,” Whittington said.
The $1.5 million project between Ponahawai and Pauahi streets includes road resurfacing, improved drainage and a pedestrian crossing light near Kukuau Street.
It started Jan. 2, and traffic has been reduced from four to two lanes since.
The county required the company to be done by the Merrie Monarch Festival, which runs from March 31 to April 6.
Road paving will begin this weekend, starting at Pauahi Street.
Whittington said drivers can expect the road to remain down to two lanes for the rest of the project.
New drainage boxes along Kukuau Street will be installed beginning Jan. 22.
