Student to study in Sweden
Ron O’Brien, a junior at the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management, has been awarded a Gertrude E. McVickar Study Abroad Scholarship to continue his oversees studies at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, this spring.
O’Brien, who is specializing in tropical horticulture, has maintained a cumulative 3.58 GPA. He plans to pursue a career in environmental conservation in Hawaii, and is eager to learn about the different techniques and approaches to sustainability taught in Sweden.
The award is an endowed scholarship that honors the memory of McVickar by perpetuating her belief that an opportunity to be in an unfamiliar country and culture will lead to a more tolerant and peaceful world. McVickar also believed that every student should be encouraged to participate in an international exchange program.
