Irene McCormick has celebrated many New Year’s Eves, in many ways, in her “over 90” years. She chose to spend this year’s celebration with a family picnic and stargazing at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center.
“Despite the cool temperatures, and low clouds with rain during the drive to the center, the sky at the top was clear, and the stars and space station were spectacular,” reported Bill Wagner, who chronicled the adventure for the family album.
The volunteers provided a few large telescopes for visitor viewing, and an informative and enthusiastic briefing on the various stars and constellations.
McCormick described the outing as “Another grand adventure.” She lives in Hilo, and was joined by family members living in Hilo and by relatives visiting her from North Carolina for the holidays.
