The Hilo Community Chorus will present an all-American choral concert on Mother’s Day, May 12, at the Palace Theater in Hilo.
Rehearsals will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo rehearsal room next to the Performing Arts Center.
Music for the concert includes Randall Thompson’s “The Testament of Freedom,” a setting of four passages from the writings of Thomas Jefferson; selections from Aaron Copland’s “Old American Songs,” including “Simple Gifts” and “I Bought Me a Cat”; and a selection of mostly 21st century arrangements of spirituals, including medleys arranged by Linda Spevacek and Mark Hayes, and a Moses Hogan arrangement of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” There will be several opportunities for solos, ranging from a few measures to an entire song. All soloists will come from the chorus. Auditions for the soli will be held in April.
The Hilo Community Chorus is a non-auditioned community-based chorus directed by Tom McAlexander and accompanied by Walter Greenwood.
