Senior guard Kenan Gaspar scored a team-high 19 points and junior forward Jonah Bredeson added 17 as Konawaena defeated Honokaa 60-48 in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation opener for both boys basketball teams Friday at Honokaa Armory.
Junior guard Brandon Awa added 10 points for the Wildcats, who led by as many as 20 in the third quarter.
Alika Alip scored a game-high 21 points for the Dragons, and Keanu Freitas added seven.
In the JV contest, Honokaa defeated Konawaena 50-46 in overtime.

Pahoa 58, Ka’u 37: Seniors Nick Fisher and Randin Napeahi each scored 18 points in Pahala for the Daggers in the season opener for both teams.
Sophomore guard Tolby Saito added 16 points for Pahoa.
Greg Javar paced the Trojans with 12 points, and Alexis Alejo added 10.
In the JV contest, Pahoa beat Ka’u 53-36 behind 18 points from Joel Rosario and 10 from Keinan Agonias.
Franklin Orcino led the Trojans with 18 points, and Chance Emmsley-Ah Yee had 10.

Konawaena 91, Kealakehe 7: Freshman guard Chanelle Molina poured in a game-high 27 points, and senior guard Hoku Liftee followed with 21 at Onizuka Gymnasium as the two-time defending Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I champion Wildcats cruised in their home opener.
Senior forward Courtney Kaupu added 18 points for Konawaena, which led 27-5 after the first quarter.
Kehau Lee paced Kealakehe (0-2) with three points.
