Waiakea High School graduate Eric Tao, owner of Da Hukilau Hawaiian Bar and Restaurant in San Francisco, is one of the chefs invited to infuse the Jan. 3 swearing-in reception for newly elected U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono with a liberal dash of aloha. He is one of the founders of the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California.
Tao will assist Les Tomita and Mariah Brown, founders and owners of Da Kitchen restaurant on Maui, who will travel to Washington, D.C., from Kahului to prepare the reception dinner for current Congresswoman Hirono’s official induction into the Senate.
“They will be bringing fresh island produce and products from Hawaii, and will be cooking up truly local fare found at Da Kitchen restaurants as well as a few surprises for Mazie Hirono’s guests in D.C.,” said an event spokesman.
This will be Tomita’s second special assignment to transport cuisine from Hawaii to the nation’s capitol. Tomita was invited to cook for the 2009 Inaugural Luau for Hawaii native Barack Obama’s inauguration as president.
