A 45-year-old Kailua-Kona man died early Thursday morning after his sport utility vehicle collided head-on Wednesday afternoon with a Hele On Bus on Highway 19 at the 3-mile marker in Ookala.
Police identified him as Kris Korban. Police say Korban’s northbound 1993 Ford Explorer crossed the center line and collided with the southbound county bus.
Korban was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:38 a.m. Five passengers from the bus were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. The bus driver, a 58-year-old Hilo man, was treated for minor injuries at Hilo Medical Center.
Police believe that alcohol may have been a factor in this crash.
Korban’s death is the 38th official traffic fatality so far this year, compared to 21 at this time last year.
