This letter of appreciation is long overdue, and I apologize for its delay.
Earlier this year, our 9-year-old grandson ran away from home. Fortunately, his adventure ended happily as Dison was found unharmed.
We would like to recognize all who participated in his recovery: the anonymous Good Samaritan family who cared for him, the men and women of the Hawaii Police Department, the Missing Child Center in Honolulu, the news media and the community. We are very grateful for your untiring dedication.
We are also indebted to the Rev. Clark Watanabe (Honomu Henjoji Mission) for spiritual reassurance.
Again, to all the aforementioned people, on behalf of Dison’s ohana, thank you for bringing him home.

Useless lawmakers
Here we are, folks, coming closer to the “fiscal cliff.” Congress and the president are haggling, to apparently no end. We have not heard word one from our Hawaii delegation, House or Senate. Apparently, they have no opinion. Noteworthy is that our senior senator holds the purse strings.
Our do-nothing delegation is at it, again.

Great band
1. No amount of praise and vicarious pleasure could ever be adequate enough to describe the magnificent performance punctuated by Hilo’s own Hawaii County Band on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Mooheau Park bandstand. Their concert gave added impetus with the appearance of the Kanilehua Chorale, who rendered several selections from their repertoire of songs as they were being accompanied by the County Band.
2. I would not go so far as to say that our County Band isn’t appreciated. Far from it. Rather, their appearances at numerous concerts is deserving of a wider audience. Otherwise, you deprive yourselves of hearing enjoyable music in motion. Their participation at many parades does little to showcase their ability and skill as professional performers.
3. The County Band warmed the cockles of my Hawaiian heart to no end as they thrilled my wife and I and the crowd in attendance, which elicited exuberant gratitude by their prolonged applause.
4. The members of our Hawaii County Band are a credit to their profession and are good enough to compete at any level and with any band in the land. I wish to thank them for all they do and the joy they give. God bless them for their continued success.
