Big Dog Run/Walk on tap
The Big Island Road Runners’ inugural Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Thanksgiving Day 5K Walk/Run will be held on Thanksgiving Day. The start and finish will be at the parkin g area of Moku Ola or Coconut Island, off Banyan Drive in Hilo.
The event is free and registration will be at the event just prior to the start. There is no cost for the event, however, participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation for the Salvation Army to help needy families during the upcoming holiday season.
“On a day set aside to give thanks, the Big Island Road Runners want to bring the community out for a healthy way to start the day while acknowledging the tremendous amount of extremely important service Wayne Joseph has given to the Big Island Community,” said BIRR president Steve Pavao.
Joseph is a former Marine, a Vietnam veteran, a longtime teacher, cross country coach, executive director of the Big Island International Marathon, former Race Director of the Volcano Marathon, former president of the Big Island Road Runners, a leader in the HSTA retirees organization, former member of the County of Hawaii’s Ethics Commission, and a longtime sports writer and columnist for the Hawaii Tribune- Herald.
All walkers and runners are wlecome. Memebership is not required for this event. There will be no time limit. There will be post-run refreshments. For additional information, call Pavao at 430-0267.
HGEA Tennis Fun Day set
The HGEA Tennis Fun Day will be held Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium. HGEA members and their guests are invited to play social doubles.

Elks Hoop Shoot Contest
The annual Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13. The free-throw shooting contest boasts the largest non-commercial, co-educational sports program in America, with more than 3 million participants each year.
Participants advance through local, district, state, regional and national levels. One boy and one girl in each of the three age categories (8-9, 10-11, 12-13) wins a national title at the finals in Springfield, Mass. The top six national finalists’ names are inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Filipino hoops tournament
Shipman Gym is looking to host a filipino baseketball tournament Nov. 23-25. Those eligible to play have to be of full Filipino decent. Anyone interested in participating in the tournament is asked to call Leo at 640-5929.
Ka‘u baseball coach sought
The Ka’u High School athletic program has re-opened its head baseball coach position. Anyone interested in applying for the position can pick up an application at the school office. Deadline to apply is Nov. 30.

The Department of Parks and Recreation in Waimea will be holding registration for T-ball and coach-pitch baseball as well as boys age group basketball and adult flag football.

• Boys Age Group Basketball (Ages 9/10, 11/12, 13/14)
Sign-up: Nov. 19-30, at the Waimea Community Center (11 a.m.-2 p.m.)
Clinic: Dec. 3-5 at Thelma Parker Gym
Ages: 9/10, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Ages: 11-14, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
• Tee Ball & Coach Pitch (Ages 5/6 & 7/8)
