Lani’s Island Snack Shack is the newest tenant to open for business at the Manono Street Marketplace in Hilo.
The Snack Shack is the creation of Lani Kaluhiwa, better known as “Aunty Lani,” who has a 700-square-foot location in the new shopping center where she will sell a variety of local favorites, including shave ice, ice manapua and crack seed. Among her specialties is organic dried fruit, and there are freshly made sandwiches, sodas and Kona coffee, as well as sugar-free versions of many items.
Soon Kaluhiwa plans a produce section and will make gift baskets for mail-order from the store. She also displays unique custom gift bags and baskets made by local artists. Kaluhiwa said her aim is to support local vendors and she is seeking new products.
The new commercial shopping center is about 60 percent leased and the tenants continue to move in, said Gina Hara Chun, spokeswoman for the project. Hawaiian Style Café, a popular Waimea eatery that’s expanding to Hilo, should be opening in a couple weeks, and Miyo’s restaurant will be moving in right after that.
Next month, Chun said she and her partner will be opening their real estate office in the Marketplace. A grand opening celebration for the entire shopping center has not been planned yet, Chun said.
The new Manono Street Marketplace is located at 681 Manono St.
