Keaau High School captured the 2012 Big Island Interscholastic Federation cheerleading championship on Nov. 4 at Kealakehe High. The Cougars upset three-time defending champion Waiakea to earn the coveted title.
This year, the Cougars squad, under head coach Tonya Baybayan, had 25 cheerleaders on the squad, the biggest ever at the school. The Cougars will compete Saturday in the HHSAA State Cheerleading Championships at Blaisedell Center in Honolulu.
Members of the Cougars cheer competition team included senior Maryann Calamayan, juniors Brianna Cadaoas and Chloe Kaua; sophomores Daysha Alameda, Kiana Akana, Charnalyn Crivello, Abigail Delarosa; and freshmen Samantha Shute, Tabitha Silva-Perreira and Maelin Tamashiro. Baybayan is assisted by Jamie Soli and volunteer coaches Sarah Lips, Elisha Tenorio and CJ Fukumoto.
