The Vulcans (1-1) opened the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament with an 89-80 win over host Western Oregon on Friday night.
Against St. Martin’s, senior Mychael Hearn scored a career-high 25 points to lead UHH.
Hearn, a 6-1 guard, made 9 of 14 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and 6 of 7 free throws. Junior forward Brandon Thomas added 11 points and seven rebounds. The Vulcans sank 17 of 20 free throws but made only 2 of 10 3-pointers while St. Martin’s hit 9 of 22.
“We had a terrible start and didn’t shoot the ball well — and they did,” Vulcan coach Jeff Law said. “We kept fighting back but just couldn’t get over the hump. We might have been a little tired, but our second team played really well today.”
UHH finished with 36 rebounds, 10 assists, 19 turnovers, 1 blocked shot and 7 steals compared to St. Martin’s 29, 20, 15, 7 and 8, respectively.
