For the eleventh consecutive year Kua O Ka LaPublic Charter School will be giving away native trees in celebration of Hawaii Arbor Day.
“Established as a day for tree planting, recipients of the native trees can join others across the state who will be honoring this simple, yet profound, idea,” said spokesman Myles De Coito.
Leila Kealoha, teacher and forestry project coordinator at Kua O Ka Laextends the school’s mahalo to the Department of Forestry and Wildlife’s Kaulunani program and HELCO for their funding support of the project. Along with HELCO, the Makuu Farmers Association supports the project with a host site for the giveaway.
Kealoha promotes the event with a simple Hawaiian proverb, or ‘olelo no‘eau: “Hahai no ka ua i ka ulula‘au.” Rain always follows the forest.
Saturday, Nov. 3, the school ohana, including students, will be at HELCO’s Hilo administrative offices located at 1200 Kilauea Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon.
On Sunday, Nov. 4, the giveaway will be from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Makuu Farmers Market on Highway 130, at mile-marker 8.
