Forgetful? The Alzheimer’s Association will present lectures on three Saturdays in November at the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo.
On Nov. 3, 10 and 17, there will be a 1 p.m. three-part series on “What Is Dementia,” “Legal Affairs in Dementia” and “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.”
These sessions will be followed, at 3 p.m. on the respective dates, by the movies “A Song For Martin,” “Away From Her” and “Iris,” then a 5 p.m. program in three parts on “Living With Alzheimer’s” for anyone who is forgetful and their family members.
It is not necessary to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s to participate in the sessions.
Hilo program coordinator Chris Ridley will facilitate the sessions. Call her for reservations at 443-7360.
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, the Life Care Center of Hilo will hold a candle-lighting ceremony in observance of November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month to remember those who died as a result of any type of dementia, and to support the increasing number of families affected by the brain disorder.
Other organizations from coast to coast will similarly hold ceremonies that day as part of an annual National Commemorative Candle Lighting sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, said Ridley.
“This unique event offers individuals touched by Alzheimer’s and related dementias the opportunity to unite in spirit and solidarity at multiple services on the same day.”
The ceremony will feature a candle lighting, a reading of names in memory and recognition, and also incense burning. For more information, call Social Services at 959-9151. Pastor Ron Brav from Calvary Church will offer a prayer. Community members may submit names to be read at the event and may bring a picture of their family member.
