During the week of Oct. 8-14, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 19; Kona, 5; Puna, 3; South Kohala, 2; and Hamakua, 1.
So far this year, there have been 1,123 DUI arrests compared to 1,163 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.4 percent.
There have been 1,140 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,083 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.3 percent.
So far this year, there were 32 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent.
Police say that to date, 22 fatalities have been related to impaired driving: eight to drugs; four to alcohol; and 10, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
