It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this year Hawaii County’s theme for the annual observance is “Commit to Change.”
“The Hawaii County Family Violence Interagency Committee (FVIC) encourages you to consider the simple ways that you can ‘commit to change’ and help eliminate domestic violence in our community,” said spokeswoman Roxanne Aburamen.
Domestic violence includes intimidation, physical assault, sexual assault, verbal, financial and emotional abuse perpetrated by an intimate partner against another.
Throughout the month, the committee will be sharing suggestions on how the community can help.
It’s a fact that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
“If you suspect someone is a victim, ask if they are safe or need someone to talk to. Don’t be afraid to let her/him that you are concerned for their safety,” explained Aburamen. Free and confidential services are available to everyone at 959-8864 (Hilo) or 322-7233 (Kona).
“Offer a safe place to make a phone call, a ride to the shelter, or to baby-sit while they attend appointments,” she said.
