A 32-year-old Utah woman died Monday from injuries suffered in a North Kohala motorcycle crash.
A 35-year-old Utah man was riding a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle northwest on Akoni Pule Highway with his wife riding on the back when he swerved near the 28-mile marker to avoid a car that crossed the center line into his lane. The motorcycle plunged about 150 feet down a gulch. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
The victim, Jennie Wahlstrom of North Kaysville, Utah, was dead at the scene. Her husband was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries. His condition was not available.
Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Wahlstrom’s death is the 31st traffic fatality this year compared to 16 at this time last year.
Police are looking for the driver of a gray sedan or anyone else who may have been in the area at the time and may have witnessed the crash.
Witnesses are asked to call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, extension 229. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
